Boot Camp Fitness Secrets

Have you ever really looked forward to your workouts because they are fun... hard, but fun? Have you ever done the same fitness class three days (or more) a week for years on end? Have you ever done a workout where you just kept getting stronger and faster and fitter month after month after month?

If you are like most out there, you answered "no" to those questions. And that is why so many people fall of the fitness wagon...they either stop seeing results or they get bored, or worse, both!

Scores of people try this and that, fitness-wise, but burn out quickly because they get bored, the workout never changes so it gets stale, and they stop seeing results. It doesn't matter if it is a class, weight-lifting, cardio machines, or working with a trainer....at some point you hit a wall.

But this doesn't really seem to happen with the boot camps that have sprung up all over the world in the last 5 or so years. What makes Boot Camps so popular? What's their secret?

SECRET #1 - Outdoors environment - Let's be honest, given the choice, which would you rather hear when you work out, the sound of the breeze blowing through the trees or the clanking of weights and someone else's definition of "music"? Would you rather do your exercises on the grass or the sand, or would you prefer fitness equipment coated in other people's sweat and germs? (Eeeeeewwwww!)

When you workout outside, well, it is kind of hard to describe it, but it is just different from anything else... the sun, the stars, the moon, the wind, the snow, even rain all give you an experience like no other. You get an emotional, almost spiritual, benefit from working out in Mother Nature's gym, with all the elements it has to offer. "Exhilarating" "Peaceful" "Energizing" "Amazing"... all words regularly used to describe outdoor fitness boot camps.

SECRET # 2 - Variety. The only thing you will get over and over again in an outdoor boot camp workout is variety. There are literally hundreds of exercises and many, many workout formats that can be used in an outdoor fitness workout, most without any equipment at all! There are individual-oriented formats, partner-oriented formats and team-oriented formats.

Some examples you may never have heard about and certainly haven't done in a gym: bootstrappers, hip splits (not the same as split squats) hang-five, groiner, swimming dolphin, frogger etc etc. It is way more than just push-ups and sit-ups. They say variety is the spice of life, right? Well, variety is the spice of fitness!

SECRET #3: Camaraderie.

Nowhere else in fitness will you find a class that can make total strangers into teammates in less than 45 minutes! And I mean teammates for the long haul, not just during that one class... even if they never workout together again, they have a bond that ties them to each other every time they see each other. Once you have played hard (that is fitness-speak for "worked your a** off!") with people, doing stuff others will not do, you have a really intense bond. That is truly one thing you have to experience to understand.

And lastly, but perhaps most importantly...

SECRET #4 - Results.

Let's face it, if you are not getting results from your fitness program, you are not going to keep with it. Whether your goals are to lose fat, get stronger, get faster or just feel better physically and emotionally, boot camps will definitely give you the results you are after.

Interval training is the proven winner when it comes to fat loss and Boot Camps are all about intervals. The intervals may last 20 seconds or 3 minutes, but the point is always to do really intense work followed by an active rest/recovery...this gives you the resulting metabolic "afterburn" that literally torches fat for up to 48 hours after your workout. And when many of us sit behind a desk all day, being able to still burn serious calories at rest is huge!

Bottom line with boot camps: the challenge and variety of the workouts, the beauty of the outdoors and the team-oriented aspects make for a powerful force that is driving the popularity and success of boot camps around the world.
